WHAT A DISPATCHER IS
A dispatcher is the middle link that sits between the supply chain and logistics. They are the central point of communication — the person who connects the carrier, the broker, and the shipper into one coordinated operation.
A dispatcher's sole purpose is to take care of the driver — managing their paperwork, protecting their interests, and ensuring they get paid on time and in full. They handle the real-time communication, resolve problems as they arise, and keep the load moving from pickup to delivery.
They are a logistics representative — a professional who understands freight law, carrier agreements, rate negotiation, and compliance. They operate with structure, accountability, and a clear understanding of the ecosystem they serve.
WHAT A DISPATCHER IS NOT
A dispatcher is not a freight broker. They do not broker deals with shippers, they do not hold freight authority to move loads under their own operating authority, and they do not negotiate contracts directly with shippers on behalf of themselves.
A dispatcher is not a double broker. Double brokering — taking a load already under contract and re-brokering it to another carrier without authorization — is illegal, unethical, and a direct violation of carrier agreements. A professional dispatcher never engages in this practice.
A dispatcher does not make promises they cannot keep, does not misrepresent rates, and does not operate outside the boundaries of their carrier's authority. Their role is execution and protection — not deal-making.
